Custom-Made Chips

Design your own chip.
With our established groove cutting, modification, and lamination technologies, we propose and fabricate a micro-chemical chip that suits your needs and budget.
The time for delivery is usually about a month after the finalization of the design, but is negotiable.

Example: Custom-Made Chips(glass)

To fabricate your custom-made chip, we need to know your preference as to the following three points:

(1)Material and working process
(2)Method of piping attachment
(3)Channel design

(1)Material and working process

  1. You can choose the material from borosilicate glass, fused quartz, and PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) according to the intended purpose and the experiment to be performed with the chip

  2. Borosilicate glass

Resistant to heat and chemicals, borosilicate glass is the most popular choice of material for our custom-made chips. A 2-mm thick piece exhibits a high transmittance of approximately 90% over the wavelength range from about 350 nm to about 2500 nm. Two options are available for working process: wet etching and machine cutting.

    Wet etching Dimensional accuracy: +-10%
    Aspect ratio: About 2:1
Sizes achievable: 1 to 150 µm deep
Shape of the bottom and sides of the channel: Smooth finish
Cross-sectional shape of the channel: Round
    Machine cutting Dimensional accuracy: +-10%
    Aspect ratio: Not specified
Sizes achievable: &ge 100 µm deep
Shape of the bottom and sides of the channel: Cut marks are left
Cross-sectional shape of the channel: Round
  3. Fused quartz

Because of its superior optical characteristics, fused quartz is suitable for experiments using an optical system. The transmittance is extremely high, approximately 90%, even in the vacuum ultraviolet range, down to about 175 nm. The range of depths achievable by wet etching is narrower than that with borosilicate glass, and quartz chips are costly to produce. Two options are available for working process: wet etching and machine cutting.

    Wet etching Dimensional accuracy: +-10%
    Aspect ratio: About 2:1
Sizes achievable: 1 to 50 µm deep
Shape of the bottom and sides of the channel: Smooth finish
Cross-sectional shape of the channel: Round
    Machine cutting Dimensional accuracy: +-10%
    Aspect ratio: Not specified
    Sizes achievable: &ga;100 µm deep
Shape of the bottom and sides of the channel: Cut marks are left
Cross-sectional shape of the channel: Round
  4. PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane)

PDMS, a type of silicone rubber, is transparent, hydrophobic, and elastic. Less resistant to nonspecific adsorption and highly permeable to gases, PDMS chips should be used carefully in experiments. The fabrication process uses a simple mold and is less costly than that for glass chips in terms of cost per chip, making PDMS a material suitable for fundamental experiments.

    Dimensional accuracy: +-20%
    Aspect ratio: Not specified
    Sizes achievable: &la;800 µm deep
Shape of the bottom and sides of the channel: Depends on the mold
Cross-sectional shape of the channel: Rectangular

(2)Method of piping attachment

  1. Borosilicate glass and fused quartz chips do not support direct attachment of piping and require a piping holder.
Piping holders, piping connectors, capillary tubes, and sample-delivery devices are available ready-made.
If you plan to use a ready-made piping holder, we will help you choose one; you need to select a holder that has connection(s), to the chip, in right place(s).
PDMS chips, on the other hand, support direct attachment of piping. Gluing silicone tubes to the chip will make it ready for the experiment

(3)Channel design

  1. Finally, the time to design the channel has come.
The specifications will be determined according to your needs and budget. If you have not decided on the design, please consult us.

Example of chip processing technology

  1. Custom-made chip
    Channel formation Wet etching

    channel shape

The cross-section of the channel is a round shape due to the isotropic etching. The smallest size of channel is 30um width and 5um depth.

    Guide structure

The guide structure on the bottom of the channel can stabilize the laminar flow.

    Pillars in the channel

The pillars may affect to stabilize the contact surface at extraction process.

    Dam structure

The dam structure is useful to fill up the plastic beads or other particles in the channel.

    Machine cutting

    Channel shape

The cross section of the channel is a rectangle shape when the fine drilling process is applied. The smallest size of the channel is 100um width and 15um depth.

    Surface treatment of the channel

The hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface treatment is available. Please contact us for details.

Lamination Lamination of 2 plates The plate with channels and the plate with the inlet/outlet holes are laminated by heat-press. No adhesives are used and No contaminant problem in the channels occur.
Pile-up 3 or more plates with channels and through holes can also be laminated. it is used when the complicated reaction process or the multiple synthesis reaction steps are needed.
